Black, resinous poison extracted from the
bark and juices of various South American
trees and plants. Originally used on
arrowheads by Amazonian hunters to paralyse
prey, it blocks nerve stimulation of the
muscles. Alkaloid derivatives (called
curarines) are used in medicine as muscle
relaxants during surgery.
